Mk1 2000 mo/d saloon.
As promised some details and photos, hopefully , of my winter project.
I collected the car last week, at the time i did consider trailoring it back from Cornwall but decided that it
was worth risking a breakdown, glad i did, apart from an inoperative o/d, she sailed along quite happily
on the A30 over dartmoor and back to Torquay.
The car has had just 1 owner since march '68, i have the original bill of sale.Following the first owners demise the car was laid up in '82
and slumbered in a garage in Falmouth for the next 30yrs,remarkable really.
The car, after a basic recommissioning, got a valid ticket/tax at which point it was offered for sale.
My intention is to carefully strip the car and have it repainted in the original conifer green, while i do the stripping the engine, gearbox, back axle
will taken apart and rebuilt, the engine will uprated , have not yet decided on spec, but it will involve triple webers ,better breathing, balancing etc.
Work should start soon and i will try to take photos and notes on here to show the progress, springish next year is the target completion
time,
cheers for now,
Laurence

Re: Mk1 2000 mo/d saloon.
Hi Laurence,
Nice car. It brings back memories of my gunmetal Mk1 which I had from 1974 to ~1985 (the first of many Triumphs over the years). We did loads of miles in it, mainly Oxford to Exeter and back!
If you're really keen to do lots of upgrades, engine-wise it would be worth considering a Mk2 engine. Probably more scope for improvement, but at the loss of originality.
However, it's your car to do with as you wish!
Good luck with it all.
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Mk1 2000 mo/d saloon.
I think I'd do just the same. In fact, in the end my Mk1 had an early TR6 engine in it complete with an SAH357 CAM, but with twin CD150s. Loads of torque, especially with the standard diff!englishbull wrote:Mike..........................Knowing Laurence this car will have a PI engine........
I still have that engine and CAM. It could well end up being rebuilt and put into the latest PI!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Mk1 2000 mo/d saloon.
All,
A brief update on my winter project.
Having sourced a suitable 2500cc lump which should be arriving soon for the work to start. I did consider going the pi route but having had many thousands of reliable miles with triple webers on the 5 and 6 i have decided, given what i want from this engine, they will be the best solution,-no doubt the debate of pi v carbs may get opened again..
While work starts on producing a suitable power source i can get on with the stripping of body to prep for paint.
I'm sure many here have gone through this process with their own cars and therefore i would like some pointers. In order to remove the stainless steel trim are any special tools/techniques required?.Is there a particular order that pieces should be removed?
Hopefully a photo is attached showing the nasty pockmarks of rust on the nosecone there are a few more scattered around the car, thankfully none are rotten but clearly to ensure they do not erupt later after final painting are there any ideas here how best to clean and prepare these areas. My painter seems confident that they will not pose a problem.
The mod gearbox and diff will be going to Mike Papworth for reconditioning and strengthening and while its away the suspension/brakes can be rebuilt.
Will keep you posted and thanks in advance for any ideas/advice,
cheers,
Laurence
