Hi all,
Sticking to my schoolboy budget, I decided to rebuild the ruined gearbox mount rather than forking £70 out for a new one. This one was new 25 years ago and has only covered roughly 100 miles in those years and even it's split apart. Not sure when it broke but it's surely broken now since the car hasn't moved in 20 years!
1. Filed a recess in the mount for the new metal tabs to fit into to stop the rubber from falling out of the bottom.
2. New tabs in place, bent 90° at the ends to stop the rubber moving from side to side.
3. Tabs were welded on and grounded smooth.
4. Small tabs were tack welded onto the top of the mount to stop the rubber from lifting out of the top and then ground smooth.

Re: Gearbox Mount
Hi Sam,
so ok then it's not to original spec but it should locate the gearbox for now until finances permit a better solution. I did buy a new mounting from Rimmers a few years ago and I was most unimpressed with the quality, overall it was thinner metal and the bolt holes for cross member were too small and badly spaced, I ended up drilling them out and I used the mounting for a while before eventually buying a better quality Witor part that I think he gets from Oz. Another solution I like the look of and to keep costs down would be to used 2 cotton reel type mounts but that needs a different bracket to the gearbox and a different cross member, all time and fabrication but it does not need to be expensive. Next time mine needs replacement I would consider such an option, I have a vague recollection of someone using such a mod, might have been on a Stag, can anyone remember it ? Not really connected to all this but today I have had my Mk2 39 years, stay safe everyone out there isolating.

Re: Gearbox Mount
The Stag I believe has a pair of cotton reel mounts.

Re: Gearbox Mount
The Stag does indeed have "cotton reel" mountings, but these would not be suitable for the 2000 range (unless fitted with a Stag engine!) as the gearbox mounting on the 2000 has to stop the engine and gearbox from moving backwards and forwards. On the Stag the engine mountings do that.
