Propeller shaft length

#1 Post by trolleybus » Tue Apr 09, 2019 3:48 am

I am changing from a BW65 to a manual O/D on my 1977 2500TC.
It would appear that the propeller shaft will be too long.
My books say there is about an 8.5mm difference between the auto and the manual but this is for the BW35.
I have it set up on a trolley with the front and rear sub frames attached and it looks like the extension on the O/D box is about 2.5" 60mm longer than the auto.
Anybody know what length I need I'd appreciate it.

Compare these, you can be sure it is correct information......

Not sure if those measurements are with the sliding joint compressed or extended though :?:

I have one off a car. 128mm from end to end measured from outside each flange. If the sliding joint is fully compressed (which it wouldn't be under normal driving) the overall length from outside of each flange is 120mm.
Hope this makes sense!

This could be wrong, but I believe the only difference is in front of the front UJ. The auto having a splined female shaft, the manual having a flange. The measurement from yoke centre to yoke centre with the sliding joint compressed will show if that is correct.

Charles, the BW35 prop has a splined shaft at one end, the BW65 prop has a flange at both ends!

Thanks Dave B I had since found this info.
It would appear that my BW65 shaft is around 95mm too long for the manual with the O/D.

So is the BW35 the same length?
