Auto box tailshaft movement

#1 Post by Forkie » Mon Aug 13, 2018 10:03 pm

Auto box , splined shaft ( output shaft I believe) protruding from rear of box ,the shaft where the prop slides onto. - this shaft has obvious movement up/down side/to side. Tailshaft oilseal now removed
- exactly the same before/after oil seal removal. Mileage 47k. Does this warrant further investigation or is this normal? Thanks.

Yes, this is perfectly normal. Having recently replaced my the rear seal on my auto box in my PI, it was exactly the same as you describe.

There is nothing to support the rear of the shaft. Once the prop slides back in then the prop runs in a white metal bearing and the rear of the tailshaft is supported. There should be negligable play on the prop.

Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

Ok thanks for those replies - I will take that as a positive for my 'box..I am contemplating removing the 'box to address my damaged ring gear and the several leaks. Am just hoping my local Trans specialist will still be up for it as they down sized a few years ago.
