Auto Flexi plate / fly wheel

#1 Post by dolomitejohn » Wed Jul 04, 2018 9:06 am

Hi All,

Does any one know if the Auto Flex plate (Fly wheel) on a 2500 Auto has a tendency to break / shatter at high mileages ? I ask as I looking at an Auto and am remembering back to my Dolomite 1500 HL Auto which broke its Flexi plate on the M6 at 80 MPH. Had lasted 128000 miles though.... Bizarrely it still drove as the section of plate still attached to the crank was jamming in the section of plate still attached to the torque convertor. Nice noises mind.........

Also, any one know the engine speed of a 2500 S Auto at 70 MPH ?

Thanks All.

John

Well,

I've had auto boxes (35 and 65) on Dolly's, both 1500 and 1850 but not above 100k. Not had trouble on with the plate on those mileages and I always thought them bullet proof - but what's the value of just one other person's experience?

A long time since I ran a 2500s with auto box (BW65) but if memory serves I would say about 3000/3200 rpm. The owners manual should give the factory figure.

Dolomites weren't ever fitted with 35 boxes.
Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.
Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

Hi John. By no means an expert at all but by what I have gathered over time on here is the auto flexi plate was manufactured a tad thin / holes too close at the center/ a combination of these points. This i believe over a period of time causes stress in these areas which eventually leads to cracking and eventual failure. I am not sure if it it is speed or age related,or if every unit is doomed to fail! I am sure if you look back at previous posts there will be more info on this. Something also tells me there are strengthened ones available, but i may be wrong on that.

All I can say is that I've still got the box in the garage.

Tell me the series number on the data plate and I should be able to tell you what it's really from. I don't think it's even possible to put a BW35 in a Dolly because the tunnel it to narrow, but maybe someone "improved" the car by fitting one sometime in the past.

Hmmm, maybe my memory is a bit hazey. You're probably correct. I tried to replace an auto-box on my 1850HL with a spare from the garage. As I've only broken 2.5 Mk.2's I assumed it to be a 65 but it wouldn't fit so I had to get Raf Ferron to do a refurb.

Am needing to drag a spare engine out next month or so and I'll have a look at any auto-boxes I see. Trouble is I got rid of a load of spare engines and gearboxes about five years ago. Might have got rid of my two spare auto-boxes! We shall have to see.

cheers,

Kev
