Gearbox differences

I am planning on fitting a replacement 'A' type manual overdrive gearbox to a 1973 PI.
The only good used 'A' type gearbox that I have is from a 1973 2000.
Looking at the official Triumph manual, the MK2 PI gearbox was identified by the letters MD, whereas the MK2 2000 gearbox had the letters MB.
Does anyone know the actual difference between the two?

I think that the gearbox is the same, but the A type OD has different springs, (either number or strength or both). The OD can of course be moved from one to the other unless the OD is the problem with your existing 'box.

What difference do the springs make? Is it something to do with the greater torque being transmitted through the overdrive unit when engaged?

Basically yes! Not my specialty, maybe have a chat with CW!

I had an MB A type box on my pi when I got it John and it made no difference tbh. Not sure if it had the PI O/D on it or 2000 one. It still worked fine, even on a couple of trackdays.
I spoke to Andy Roberts about it and he said basically the same as Charles.

I appreciate the info Charles / Colin - thanks very much! So when the PI turns up on the camp site in Paignton with the caravan on the back, you'll know its been ok!
