Overdrive issue sorted.

The overdrive on my 2000 Mk2 saloon started playing up, by switching in and out when turned on.

Firstly I checked the gear knob switch, which had both voltage feed and continuity when turned on. I then suspected low gearbox oil, so changed that for fresh. No change.

I then suspected the 3rd/4th limiter switch, but apart from knowing that it is on the top of the gearbox, was unsure how to check. I removed the leather gaiter and console infill, and followed the twin cable. Low and behold there was a join in one of the wires, so I used my 'twiddle it and see what happens' joint testing technique. Sure enough the wire parted. Quick join repair and all is working well.

I just wonder why a PO had felt the need to break and join the cable though........

Glad you found it so easily. P/O's do strange things.
You may now come to New Zealand and find out why mine won't engage when hot.
Think it's the solenoid O rings. Will find out when I get some new one's.
I understand oversize one's are available. Anyone know?
Tony.

I didn't know that oversize O rings for the solenoid existed but if looking for them I would contact the two specialist o/d companies in the UK (one is in Sheffield).

On the only non-engaging o/d box when hot that I have encountered was rectified by draining the oil,
cleaning as much crud out without removal of o/d from gearbox, changing the filters within and then re-filling with specification oil (EP80?).

if its a J type there is inside the end of the solenoid a small 10mm circlip, this when removed releases the spool inside , this is the bit that sticks , most O rings seal the outer body

you need a 1"AF thin wall spanner to undo the sol. dont wrench it off with grips on the body you can wreck it easily.

give it a good shake you should hear the inner plunger clatter back and forth, if not its stuck a good clean solves the sticking.
this can cause all sorts of involuntary engage disengage problems
