Hello
I have a manual overdrive gearbox with a very nicely working overdrive and a standard 4 speed gearbox.
Ive removed the gearbox mentioned above and replaced it with a temporary loan box. upon fitting this loan box i have noticed a complete change in the smoothness of how the car drives and in particular clutch operation. all i changed was the gearbox so this shows to me my one wasnt the best.
Now i want to dismantle it and fit the overdrive into the four speed box.
I greatly welcome any advice and hints on how it is best to do this. what things i might like to replace along the way etc?
id like to clean internally the overdrive but as it worked rather well before hand do not wish to dismantle it if i can avoid it.
The four speed box is from a low milage vehicle and worked very well in the car as it was only removed in favor of an overdrive gearbox.
Thanks Kieran

You'll have to change the mainshaft at least. Others with more experience than me will be along shortly, but it may be well be the overdrive.

Hello.
Yep I figured that would be different and ill have to either retain my selector cover thing or bebuild it with the less worn selectors from the other gearbox which would be preferrable.

I did exactly this many, many years ago! 1974 I think, when I converted my Mk1 to overdrive.
You will have to dismantle both 'boxes and swap the O/D main shaft over. These 'boxes are not difficult to work on and it can be done without any special tools - although they do help.
At least, you will have all the bits you'll need!
Good luck!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: Gearbox/Overdrive. Advice wanted!
Hi all,
I want to disassemble the two remote selector extension housing things I have and apply the nicer and less worm selectors etc into my overdrive ready one ( has the holes for both switches) but I have no idea how to. I want the fear selection to feel positive and I assume that comes from these selectors. And the area where the gear lever itself is doing the selecting.
Your help and advice will be well recieved!
