BW65 possible replacement for BW35 ?

#1 Post by Thorsten » Sun May 22, 2016 10:25 am

Dear all,

I'm quite sure to have read about this topic before but can't find it at the moment ...

The BW35 of my 2.5 PI gave in recently (lost drive on the motorway for a few secs, regained it, but when I left at the next exit and pulled down the window it smelled extremely of ATF - rather fresh than burnt, though) and since then at least the reverse gear is gone... :-(

Options are
* to rebuild this very gearbox
* to replace it with a rebuilt BW35 out of my Mk2 Estate (which unfortunately is buried at the far end of a shed behind several rows of immobile cars)
* to replace it with a BW65 (including converter and drive shaft) which convieniently was already extracted from a driving car some years ago

The last option seems the fastest to me (not necessarily the most sensible) - but would it work?

Thank you for your input!

Kind regards
Thorsten

Hi Thorsten.
It definitely works. Ive done it myself a couple of times many years ago. These days I prefer Man O/D!
From memory the differences are:
•Tailshaft
•Speedo Cable
•Cooler lines
I'm sure there is more.
The 65 is a far superior box to the 35 and is a worthwhile improvement.

Hope that helps you.

I agree, it shouldn't be a big task as it was fitted to the later cars.

As already said, you'll need a different propshaft (Flange each end) and probably mounting bits. Mind you, if the BW85 has come from a Triumph all that should be available!

Cheers,
Mike.

Hi all,
Thank you for your replies - very much appreciated!
Meanwhile I had a change of plan, but got stuck at a particular point:
A mate offered to overhaul my BW35 (orig Mk1 PI, 7EZ... Plate), but is unable to get the proper brake bands.
I tried with Jpat but got stuck at the question if I need flexible or solid brake bands?!
Can someone answer me this or did they use different bands with every second unit?
What brake bands are suitable for a BW35 gearbox?

Any help appreciated!

...only 15 sleeps ... :-)

Kind regards
Thorsten

All BW35 use a solid rear band. As for the front I can only speak with certainty about the Rover V8 BW35, (but I'd see no reason why it would be different on the Triumph) and in that case if it has a manually adjusted front servo it uses a solid band, if it has an automatically adjusted front servo it can use a flexible band or a solid.
From your gearbox number I'd say from the factory it would have been the manually adjusted servo, and hence the solid band, but a lot of things could have been changed in the 45-ish years since then.

Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

Hi Harvey,
thanks a lot for the explanation!
Guess it's a solid one then...
