Quicker Gear Change

My 2000 overdrive gearbox is fine for relaxed driving, and is very much the same as the other 70s cars that I have driven over the years. However, it is hopeless for more 'spirited' driving as the throw is a bit long and vague.

Is there options for making the standard gearbox more precise, or is there a suitable replacement? I'm very slowly building a fast road car...

Back in the day (with friends Capris) we used to shorten the lever. Not sure if it made much difference but like side stripes it gave the impression of a faster change.

Do you have a short or a long gear-lever? The short one is much better and quicker.
Vague? Never found that. Have you adjusted your gear-lever correctly? Did you know you can adjust the play out?
The box has always felt direct and sharp to me, but the gate is quite wide.
Rover R380 box is nice and I think it would fit without much modification, but personally, I'd miss the overdrive!

Short gear stick (pre-facelift) and fully synthetic gear oil. Easily as good a R380 - got one of those in the Disco and it's about as good as a Triumph and very similar when cold!

Thanks for the responses. Mine is a pre facelift mk2 with overdrive.

Now Alan mentions it, it is probably the width that is catching me out.

Maybe I just need more practice and drive it more!!!

Don't know if it's just how I drive but I find double de-clutching is quicker - especially when I'm having a thrash!

Double de clutching generally makes the gear change smoother by reducing any 'baulking' and making the change easier, and therefore probably gives the impression of quicker gear changes.
Mention double de clutching to anyone half our age, and they will probably not have a clue what you're talking about!

I have to double de-clutch on my Land Rover. It has synchro only on 3rd and 4th!

Yet another dying art...

Syncromesh on all forward gears was one of the selling points of the Triumph 2000. Don't think the 4 speed Vanguards did.

Going back to the original post, the question I'd have if you are finding the throw a bit long and vague is how worn is your gearbox/linkages. The gearbox in the Mk2 I used to have a few years ago was definitely much sharper and more precise than in LuLU my MK1.
