Hello All
Well, seems a common problem this!! We have just covered 900 miles last week in the MK1. I fitted a second new propshaft and this appears to heve cured the vibration....until you get to about 65mph. Then it starts and disappears again at about 68mph. However, it doesn\'t always do it. If the car is pulling hard it is worse, running downhill it is better. I can only think that it could be engine or gearbox mountings. What does everyone else think?
You seem to have a frustrating problem too Dion!

Hi all,
I\'m new to the club, the discussion forum and 2000s/2500s/2.5s. Just
thought I stick my oar in to the vibration discussion. My car
(1976 2500S with manual overdrive) is currently in a garage having its
vibration investigated. It starts at around 55mph and is really bad, not so
much a vibration, more a strong shudder. Seems to come from the front
end but who knows? Curiously the problem is intermittent - go over a
small rut in the road and the vibe stops and you can push the car on to
70, 80 and beyond, but then go over another and it starts again. It
vibrates to a really quite bad degree, more than just annoying. Any
solutions I would be grateful (I know we\'ve already talked Brian!)

I had a car that suffered from vibration. It was intermitent. It needed some kind of jolt or what ever to set it off, like O/D coming sharply or a not very clean gearchange. I found in my case, it was the engine and GB mountings.

That\'s interesting - Brian suggested gearbox mounting too. I\'ll pass it on
to the garage.

Thought I should write the final update on the vibration issues on my car.
After weeks and weeks, sometimes in frustration I toyed with the idea
of selling the car for scrap (although it is in quite good condition),
I now have a smooth running automatic 2500 TC.
To try to solve the heavy vibration, I did the following in the last 4 months:
- exchange the wheels & tyres
- exchanged the driveshafts
- exchanged the propshaft
- exchanged the autobox
- exchanged the flywheel
- mounted a flywheel repair plate
- exchanged the torque converter
- exchanged the engine mounts
- exchanged the gearbox mount
- put in shorter distance pieces for the gearbox mounting
- had the propshaft U/Js renewed and propshaft rebalanced
- re-hung the exhaust where it passes through the rear subframe

It seems the main fault was the unbalanced propshaft. That was my first
thought all these months ago, so I substituted it for one I got from a
scrap car. That did not change anything about the vibration, so I
assumed the problem was not in the propshaft. After all, both prophafts
surely could not be faulty?
Well, they WERE! Never assume anything.

The last bit of vibartion dissappeared when I discovered the exhaust
would touch the hole in the subframe. So I re-hung the pipe at
the subframe mounting (not the best piece of engineering if you
ask me) and that helped.

Exit CX for daily commuting - hello 2500!

Dion.
Well Done! Seems you\'ve spent a lot of time and money on this.
Since I\'ve had vibration problems on my car (and still have) I\'ve heard a
huge range of causes and solutions from various owners. Possibly one of
the most interesting pieces of technical data came from the club technical
notes which reprints a service bulletin from the Australian BL Service
Department, describing the various reasons for vibration and how to cure
them. One really interesting bit describes how to balance the wheels on
the car, and also the exact configuration of the rear suspension and diff
mountings. My 2500S, which is shortly to be worked on, has, courtesy of
a previous confused owner, Mk1 rear springs, pre-facelift trailing arm
brackets and facelift diff mounts. This is almost certainly causing a lot of
my vibration due to the angles of the propshaft UJs not cancelling each
other out. I have new springs on order and will revert entirely to original
geometry, hopefully this will give me the foundation to start sorting
everything out.
So, you\'ve sorted the noise and vibration from your drivetrain, now how\'s
the wind noise through your quarterlights?!

Hi Allen,
yes, I have seen these Australian Notes, plus I had gathered 5+ years of user tips from the magazine regarding vibration trouble. But it all turned out to be the propshaft not in balance. The engineer doing the balancing said even a stiff U/J could cause vibrations.
And indeed, the wind noise is quite enormous. I have bought a new car radio 4x50W to be able to hear something!
cheers
Dion

I\'ve bought a can of clear shower-room sealant, I\'m going to try putting a
bead of that around the quarterlight seal, as neatly as possible. Hopefully
it\'ll stop the worst of the wind noise. When summer comes around again I\'ll
just peel it off.
I think that the quarterlights are responsible for a huge amount of noise and
I find it to be at a frequency and level that is really unpleasant to live with.

For Brian ...
I\'ve just read your August posting where you describe a vibration that comes in at about 65 mph and goes again at about 68 mph, being worse when under load and easing off on ther over-run. Did you find the cause?
I once came across almost identical symptoms, with a BMW. I was starting a long journey and was near a BMW dealership so, for convenience, I called in for them to look at it. They couldn\'t find any fault and said they\'d have to book the car in and replace the wheels and transmission train parts one by one until the cause was eliminated. Hmm, at £60/hour?, not b. likely!
I very carefully drove the car home and then, just standing there looking at it, I noticed a clean patch on the rim of a rear wheel. All that had happened was that a balance weight had been thrown off! I found a balance weight that matched the clean patch, fitted it, and all was well again.

58MPH VIBRAION/BAD MIRROR SHAKE!!!!!
I,ve replaced TRAILING ARM BUSHES, GEARBOX CROSSMEMBER BUSHES, GEARBOX MOUNTING, REAR DIFF SUPPORT BUSHES, BOTH REAR DRIVESHAFTS, BOTH REAR HUBS, BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS, HAD ALL FOUR WHEELS BALANCED , and had the PROPSHAFT UJ,s replaced, and the PROPSHAFT BALANCED by GKN DRIVELINE!!!
The BL--DY VIBRATION IS STILL THERE!!! I,m slowly going round the bend, and will soon disappear up my own exhaust!!!
Tell me something to restore my sanity...IS THERE A MK2 AUTOMATIC in the club, THAT DOES,NT HAVE ANY VIBRATION???????
Cheers,
Barry.
