Rimmers headlight switch

#1 Post by Ltriumph » Sun Mar 18, 2018 7:19 pm

I replaced a faulty headlight switch with one I purchased from Rimmers. Upon installation the shaft of the switch is too long and the off / park / full label doesn't line up with the position indicator. Have I purchased the wrong part? It stated it was for a 2000 TC.

You have mentioned the 'park' position.
In the UK, the early Mk2 2000''s had a park position on the round light switch knob, which was operated by rotating the knob anti-clockwise from the off position, rather than the clockwise motion to operate the sidelights and dipped beam. This operated the offside sidelights only for use when parked during the hours of darkness. It was dropped on later models.
If yours is a 1978 2000, if it is the same as UK cars, then it doesn't have this lighting facility, and should have a knob without the park position. Maybe that is where the problem lies.
That's assuming NZ cars were the same as UK cars....... Someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong .....!

Just to add to Johns post, the earlier mk2 ( up to facelift model) also had a front foglight position which gave the option of foglights plus side & tail lights, the switch had five positions, park, off, sidelights, headlights, foglights, whilst the later cars had three positions, off, side, head. I am fairly sure Stags and Dololmites of the relevant years used the same switches, p/n 152432 early cars and 154807 later cars

I like the sound of having another position on my headlight switch for fog.
Does anyone know if the wiring loom is the same on the facelift models, my car is a 1977 2500TC.
That is to say the wiring is still there and an earlier switch could be fitted.

I doubt the wiring would be there on a 1977 car. If it is, there will be a red/yellow cable in the centre of the area behind the front grille, but in front of the radiator. Good luck!

I think you will find that the block connector plugs are different on the later facelift cars, which were a hard white plastic with a triangular shape end, with pins. The earlier block connector plugs are a pliable rubber with bullet type connectors. The two aren't interchangeable, and the later cars didn't have the fog light position, and as Dave says, the wiring won't be there (it isn't on my 1976 'S'), so I doubt the wiring will be in the switch wiring loom.
I'm sure someone who is a dab hand at soldering, could make the earlier switch work with the later loom, but any auxiliaries will need the additional wiring installing.
