6RA Relay for Mk1 PI Headlamps Flasher

#1 Post by tony.rayns » Thu Jan 14, 2016 10:36 am

Hi all,

I've got a relay with a broken terminal and tried to solder it back on without success :( .

Anyway, the relay has 4 spade terminals on it, 2 x C1 both carrying Blue & White cables. 1 x C2 carrying a Purple cable and 1 x W1 carrying a Brown & Black cable.

From the parts list the PN appears to be 137747 and trying to source a replacement is proving troublesome. I can find plenty with different terminal arrangements (including an additional W2 terminal) and amp ratings (20A / 30A).

Any advice would be welcome please.

Thanks in advance................
Tony

Hello Tony,

these relays seem to be getting hard to find.
If you can get the same except that it has a W2 terminal that is OK. You will need to connect an earth wire from W2 to the body (Connect to where the relay is screwed down is fine). The relay you have has the coil return inbuilt, so you will be replicating that with an external earth connection. Try and get a 30a if possible as you are switching 4 x 55 or 60 watt with it i.e. possibly 20A. (Headlight flasher)

You can swap the innards on these relays over by carefully unclenching the metal outside from the tufnol (?) base if you happen to have a spare Mk2 relay with the bracket on the top as opposed to
the side of the relay (it's awkward but technically possible if you're thus inclined).

The relays with the extra "W2" basically have a separate feed to the coil whereas the ones without internally common it off "C2". You could use one of the ones with the extra "W2" but as Alec says you'll have to add an extra wire to make it work. Where you add it depends on whether it's +ive or -ive earth and the polarity of the switching and whats being switched.
This shows the differences in the relays pretty well:

In your example I think (without a wiring diagram handy) the brown and black is a switched earth, the blue and white should be the power going to your headlights and the purple is the feed to the relay (but it could be the other way around!).

A quick google of 137747 brought up this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-C ... 0123687528
Does it look like your relay?

Hello John,

it seems that I was mistaken in thinking the internal link was to the case. But that being so the extra wire would come from C2 (purple) to W2. and W1 to brown/black. (Or vice versa, it doesn't matter)

The MK 1 earths the flasher switch to operate the relay but the MK 2 (which doesn't have a relay) takes a live from the flasher switch, so a reversal of polarity.

Can't understand problems getting these. Search '6RA Relay' on ebay and loads of them, typically about £20. Some NOS, some Lucas re-manufactured, some from other sources.

Cheers guys............ I've got a 30A jobbie on the way but with the additional W2 terminal so just a quick wiring "jumper" when it arrives and Robert's your mum's brother!

John, regarding the one shown in your link, the PN is the same but the terminal arrangement is different to my original. However, looking at your link to the diagrams this too could be made to work with the aid of a piggy back terminal on C1.

Thanks again,
Tony
