Alternator rating

Hi All,

Following on from a FB posting about my Halogen conversion, i was wondering what rating of alternator people use?

for info i have added the halogens X 4 that are rated at 130% above normal halogens, but clame same power rating
still to add would be the phone charger, radio and sat navs etc

To be honest, compared to the headlamps, things like satnavs, phone chargers etc. draw peanuts in power!

The standard 15/16/17ACR were rated at 25-35A output. 4 headlamps draw about 16A and then if you add rear screen heater, blower motor (fuel pump if a PI!), you are getting well above 25A.

In my PI I have an uprated alternator (it was already fitted when I bought the car). I can't remember the rating, but it is in excess of 45A. That does seem to cope OK.

It is also worth looking at the wiring from the alternator. If you have 2 thick brown wires, then that's the later type and is probably OK. If you have 1 thick and 1 thin, then that was designed for a battery sensed alternator but the modern replacements are machine sensed and so it is well worth fitting extra wires between the alternator and the battery. Also don't forget the negative connections too. If the alternator is giving 30A, then this current flows through the positive wiring to the load and then back through the engine and alternator casing. I have also fitted a negative wire from the battery negative terminal to the alternator body.

cheers, i can not quite make out if is has a built in regulator or not? as you have them would you be able to shed any light on it?

Surely the same sort of thing is available in NZ - very common alternator on Land Rovers and Jags
