#1 Post by Lloydpiestate » Wed Dec 31, 2014 12:56 pm

hi all,

ive just gone to change my starter motor with a s/h one i have here, but its got a dirrerent angled front nose on it.

any ideas ? it came out of an A type pi manual, mine is a 2000 auto.

i thought they were all the same, although the lucas book ive just looked in does state 3 different pt no"s for the front " nose ",

right then,

just been to lock up to get the rest of the starters i have there, and all came off our cars.

all have the same number stamped on the front nose casing ( the bit that goes in the bellhousing ) and is 542-456-88 some have the - between the numbers and some are just 54245688, and all are the same angle from what i can see, but the one i know came off the pi and is at a different angle has 45447035 and also the fixing holes in the nose are tapped not straight through holes as normally they are ??????

i havent had time with the light fading to take my offending one out yet to have a look at it, plus what a t**t of a job its gunna be as mine is automatic, who the blooming hell designed the auto filler tube to go right over the top starter nut !!!!!! you cant even see the nut, let alone get a spanner on it. ho hum the joys of classic motoring

Hmm that's curious.
My Mk1 is automatic, and whilst I know the Mk1 has different starter, I would have thought the attachment arrangement would be the same, but I have swopped the starter motor several times without too much difficulty. Although perhaps the position of the solenoid might be part of your problem this leads me to ask, is the gearbox filler tube positioned correctly?

finally managed to find the time to work on changing the starter again today.

the auto filler tube, according to the manual was in the right place, but on futher inspection, there is a fixing bracket on it, that attatches it to the bellhousing, this was bent around the wrong way and miles away from the bellhousing, and to push it to where it needed to go, ment removing the two heater pipes ( su"s fitted ), although the manual picture shows different !!??
so i guess you were right polly.?

anyway, job done, as for the mystery number starter, who cares now

Glad you got the starter sorted Lloyd, at least it's a little warmer again.

hmmmmmmm since relocating the autobox dip tube, the gearlever wont select 2nd or 1st

since i use 2nd quite alot for going down the mountains rather than keep my foot on the brake wearing my pads out, it seems i will have to undo the heater pipes and move the dip tube back to where it was !!!!! hows that song go " start all over again la la la "

So now you know why the bracket was the wrong way round.
Tube must be fouling the selector, long tyre lever and bid hammer required!
