the original AC DELCO alternator has recently started messing about. the output on the volt gauge has been about 13v until I switch summert on, then it drops to just under 12v. also sometimes the ign light comes on and output drops to 10v but if I dip the clutch and rev the engine the light goes out and output jumps back to 13v. could it be the brushes sticking and not touching the armature?
I suppose its about time I got a new one really!

Re: dodgy alternator
I don't throw much Triumph stuff away so have a heap of ACR alternators. Unfortunately I don't write good or stuffed on them apart from one with worn bearings. Consequently when I started on the 'S' this morning It took me 3 alternators to find a working one. At least the light goes out and I'm getting 14 volts now.

Re: dodgy alternator
Typical worn-out brushes fault. The outer one becomes too short and so doesn't give enough contact pressure thus giving a higher resistance contact. Then not enough field current flows so the output current drops off.
If you can get them, new brushes are fairly cheap and easy to fit - on an ACR type anyway. I'm not sure about the AC-Delco ones though.
I too have a pile of ACR types, mainly cannibalised to keep some others working!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: dodgy alternator
I thought I would try summert.... I had a can of contact cleaner with long thin spray tube so I sprayed it inside the rear cover in the slits near the plug connections in all directions and left it to evaporate. it seems to have done good as since then the output is 14v, the ign light hasn't flashed once, and you seem to be able to have a lot more things on at once before the output drops at all.
its never pumped out 14v before either!
