MkI PI horn problem

#1 Post by Thorsten » Mon Sep 01, 2008 8:55 pm

Hi,

inspired by the other horn thread, could someone pls explain how 'my' horn circuit should work?
RIMG0170_small.JPG
I thought the brown cable touching some other part of the steering wheel/column the horn should operate the horn - but it doesn't. So at this stage the re-installation and connection of the cable to some part (I don't know which) of the horn push button won't help, would it?

Two notes: That's the state it was when I bought the car. And the horn once worked, I've heard it myself :-).

What am I missing? (Or is there a part missing?)

Kind regards
Thorsten

Have you tried running a known earth straight to the wire, if the horn sounds then you are just missing an earth to the column.
I would also try the horns straight across the battery, as they may have stopped working.

Cheers Colin.

Hello Thorsten,

most cars with a steering wheel horn button have a slip ring at the base and a wiper to pick up the connection. (as the steering column rotates, this is the practical way to complete the circuit.)
This could be your problem if the button itself looks OK.
