Facelift

#1 Post by Clifford Pope » Thu Mar 28, 2019 7:53 am

This is an embarrassing question - I have owned Triumph 2000s for probably twenty years but I have never understood this - what does "facelift" mean?

I obviously get Mk1 and Mk2, but then apparently there are "pre-facelift Mk2s", and also I found searching the forum, "post-facelift Mk1s".

Did each model have some fundamental change part way through their run? Are they therefore different things?

What were the changes, and when?

The Mk1 went through some modifications from around 1966 into 1967 models, when the door cards and grab handles were changed, rubber inserts were fitted to the over riders, but the most noticeable were the changes to the dashboard - eyeball vents, changes to the heater controls, instrument colour changes from silver to black, and of course the horn ring. There were later changes for 1967 with the introduction of leather upholstery, and then in 1968 to the position of the spare wheel position from vertical to the horizontal position for the introduction of the the PI body shell, but 'facelift' models are generally regarded as the period from 1966 into 1967 with the dashboard changes.
The facelift Mk2's were introduced in 1974. The more noticeable changes were the rubber inserts in the bumpers, the plastic front grill, the squarer numerals on the instruments, headrests, and the word Triumph on 2000 and 2500 wheeltrims, and the silver anodised finish on PI trims instead of the black finish. There were other subtle changes such as the hazard light switch, and the fasten seat belt warning, and the longer gearlever (I think) at this time, and the pile of the carpet changed to the coarser weave around this time.
There were other minor changes as well, but 1974 is classed as the start of the 'facelift' Mk2.

Mk 1 were facelift from about 1967. The early cars had white dials, vinyl seats, chrome only over riders and no eyeball vents on the dash. The heater controls also were small. Facelift Mk1's had black dials, bigger leather seats, black ends to the over riders which also changed position on the back of the car and an improved heating and ventilation system.

Mk2 cars were face lifted in about 1974 gaining different dials, rubber strips on the bumpers, headrests and a plastic grille rather than chrome. There were also different badging/models.

But the jist of it is the same Charles! Just more waffle! Although I did say grab handles on the doors cards instead of door pulls / armrests!

Many thanks.
So I haven't really missed much I wasn't aware of. I've only had Mk1s, and I realised when I got my present that my first, by comparison, was a bit deficient in some of the nice features of the second - rather elegant square clock, horn ring, patterned proper leather seats, better heater vents, boot lid rim drains to divert water down little pipes, etc. Nice changes, minor really, but part of what I now see make mine a "facelift".
