Back to where I started.....45 years ago!!

#1 Post by wild bill » Sat May 05, 2018 5:52 pm

Well,I have a garage that would hold four cars.....if tidied....Today,I stripped all the brakes on the Triumph,de glazed, front discs and pads, stripped rear brakes, honed the (original) cylinders, lubed, bled & rebuilt.
ALL OF THIS WAS DONE ON THE DRIVE....due to "parking room only"available in the garage.
Time to move out works junk(new vehicle-less room)Kids' house protect material, other assorted rubbish!!!
Problem being,I'm slightly nervous to do this as for sure,I'll jettison something that is stored for the old bike rebuild. So much to do......so little time.
Sooooo, back to the drive, at least the rain held off.Anyone got any ideas????
Cheers,
Bill.

Well, none of us ever have enough space, have you thought about a temporary garage like the ones machine mart sell, of course you still need to put it up somewhere but you can work out of the weather, should be nice and bright inside too, I always enjoyed working under a transparent car port rather than a dark garage.
Cheers, Mike

I've a barn that will hold four vehicles, plus a workshop, but until recently was also so full of stuff that it was quite difficult to get round the cars. I'm fortunate in having plenty of space outside in rural isolation, so no problems with planning rules.
For 33 years I've always been one shed short of having enough.
A couple of years ago I built a new, large shed, from proper materials not old timber and re-used corrugated iron full of holes, and designed the layout from scratch with stacks of proper shelves. The joy of moving stuff out of the barn and other sheds, sorting it carefully, and storing it on new shelves in proper categories is heaven on earth!
Also, unlike trying to tidy an existing shed, there is a lovely feeling of actually making progress, rather then simply moving the same things around and ending up exactly the same except that now I can't find anything.

I can now easily get at all the cars. The daily driver (Volvo 240) and secondary (Triumph 2000) can be driven straight out, while I only have to roll out the Volvo to use the Landrover (Series IIA) or tractor (Ferguson TE20). I recommend always parking the front wheels on slight wooden ramps. Partly for instant access if you want to change the oil or check underneath for anything, but mainly so you can roll the car out under gravity without starting the engine. It's not good for a car to be started for a few seconds just to move it, especially a modern one with a catalyst, and it's useful if you want time to load up out of the garage before setting off, or to wash it.

Now our eldest daughter has finally moved her horses to her own place we've got a stable and tack room spare, so there's somewhere to keep the trailer, dinghy, lawnmower, garden trolley, etc, and a whole new shed devoted to stored car body parts and spares. Last week I dragged a dismantled body shell to the gate and got it removed by the scrap man, so it's looking tidier outside as well now.
It's taken a lifetime to get to this point, and really I need another shed, I think.

Mike,
I quite like the idea of the carport, although it would need to be free standing to allow a trailer with car on through if ever needed.Food for thought.....Ta.
John,
I thought you had your quota, what would you do with my pup??? You never know what the future may bring......best start a book on it! Here come Mrs Chatterton, elbowing Mr Godfrey for position.......
Clifford,
You ALWAYS need another shed.I reckon when I finish the Greeves,do some general tidying I should be back in business.I would really like a four popster ramp, to ease my aching bones, just don't see the neighbours agreeing to a 2 metre extension on the garage...especially as it would have to be upwards

Thanks for all your input, may the sun continue to shine on us all.........
Bill.

I quite agree about sheds. I put up a new one last year to store all the bits I'm accumulating for the PI rebuild. It is now full (and the rebuild still hasn't started - and I've even bought a 'spit' for it too!), most of the stuff having come from the garage - and the garage is still full. The garage can hold 3 cars (all in series so it's a major job to get to the back one) but I've got back into rebuilding the 1949 Land Rover.

Hopefully the PI work can start when I've sold on the Herald to create some space! Hmm, maybe I need to build another garage... I can see that being popular with the boss!

Cheers,
Mike.
