A Sad Day as a Family Member Departs

I've now sold DOW 455K, my Triumph 2500 ex-PI, as of this morning. I advertised it on the Cars and Classics website yesterday and was quickly inundated with requests to view, from as far afield as Edinburgh and West Sussex (to where it is going).

This has been both a sad day and a happy day, but the parting would have been much sadder if the buyer hadn't been such a nice chap and a genuine enthusiast who I know will look after it. He paid the full asking price but still got a bargain in my view, so a good deal all round.

Any particular reason for selling, or just giving up the hobby?

I'm 74 with arthritis in hands and feet, so servicing and maintenance work had become a chore. Also, the car has run only 200 miles/annum on average for the past ten years, because (a) my wife insists on heated seats in winter and air conditioning in summer (and I don't blame her), and (b) I avoided taking it out in other than fine weather. That last reason may seem strange, but that's the way I liked it, and it paid off for me as the car deteriorated only very slightly over the 20 years since I rebuilt it.

My son says I've now got space in my garage for another Triumph - a Rocket 111. If only...

Old age comes to us all sadly. Since passing my test over 30 years ago, I've rarely been without a Triumph. Think I will be cremated in mine when I pop my clogs, Enjoy the rest of your retirement.

A real shame you had to let her go, but understandable.
I hope the new owner is as enthusiastic as you, I also hope they either are or will become a Register member!
Thank you for all of your input over the years, I hope you won't disappear as you don't need to be an owner to be an enthusiast!!

The new owner says he will look at joining the Register, following my recommendation. I think that would be good for both him and the Register.

Sad to hear that you've let the car go David, but I fully understand. I really must reduce my fleet somewhat but I'm hoping that the PI will be the last to go and not just yet anyway.

Sorry to hear that you have sold your car, David, I fully understand your reasons though. I too suffer with arthritis in my legs & back, especially in colder weather. Jobs on the car now take longer than they used to, and my more modern Vauxhalls maintenance work very often gets 'farmed out' if I need it back soon.
I'm not too sure I could sell one of my Triumphs though, not just yet anyway, and I really hope you don't come to regret selling yours. I'm just glad I didn't spot it for sale, I could have got myself in trouble, my first 'nice' Triumph was a 2.5PI mk2 in Saffron back in 1977, and I've always had at least one since 1975!

At age 76, with a bad knee, which made getting in and out of my beautiful Spitfire really difficult, I very reluctantly decided to pass her on to a younger person. Very enthusiastic Triumph person so didn't feel too bad although I still miss her.
Replaced with a BMW Z3.
Still have and WON'T sell my 1976 2500TC. which I've had for 19 years.
So don't feel too bad David, guess it happens to all of us over time.
