#1 Post by red2000chris » Sat Jan 26, 2013 1:01 pm

Hi. took my 2000 for her first MOT in my ownership today (sailed through!! :D :D ), but when the tester put the cars VIN number into the computor it came up as built in aug 1971, but it was registered in 74 on an M. is the computer wrong or did it sit for 3 years before being registered?? :? :? the number is: ME97461DL.

According to the service notes the very first mk2 2000 produced in Jan 74 was ME 99005, so your car was most likely built in Dec 73 as the production figures suggest approx. 2000 cars produced per month in 1973.
Computer is wrong I'm afraid.

Ask the MOT tester for a print out and send it off as evidence so you can claim your free road tax!

No it has to be BUILT pre 1973. If the DVLA records show a build date of 1971 (even though we know it may be wrong but keep quiet about that) you are perfectly entitled to claim for free tax.

Go through the procedure (check the DVLA website) ......... and good luck! :D

As Radders says, see if you can get a printout of the testers information of a build date of August 1971 and try to use that as evidence of Historic status.

The only other way of an official build date is with a Heritage Certificate (from Gaydon) but that will probably confirm the later build date. They are not cheap to get but still nice to have.

Good luck, but I doubt you will succeed. Both my Triumphs have got a spurious build date on the VOSA / MOT database. The commission numbers are wrong on both cars as well - the usual thing with letter O's and number 0's being mixed up. Unless the vehicle was first registered before a date very early in January 1973, the only evidence that the DVLA will accept to confirm a change to historic status is either an extract from the production record or a dating letter, both of which you can get from BMIHT at Gaydon.
