Do MG B Wheels fit?

#1 Post by Rob B »

Been thinking about changing the wheels on my car but i dont want to go down the Stag/S wheels route and whilst Minilites look very nice im not sure i can afford them right now.

I have spotted a set of Rostyle wheels on ebay which i think would look very smart and they are roughly period to the car too. They are from an MG B but the seller claims that these will also fit a 2000. I'd not heard this before but it wouldnt suprise me, does anyone know for sure if MGB wheels will fit?

Cheers

Essentially, yes. It's the same PCD and a very similar offset. In fact, the alloy wheels on the late anniversary edition MGBs (the silver/gold ones with the rubber bumpers) are the same as the 2500S/Stag alloys, with different centres.

Jap stuff with the 4x114 PCD is also an option, personnally I don't like the MGB rostyles, or MGB's for that matter, horrible tractors YUCK.

What about the alloy/steel wheels on the MGB V8 (also made by GKN I believe), they look quite different, I think they fitted them to Scimitars too with a slightly different offset, Scimitar wheels have the same PCD too (strange when the running gear is all ford).
My MOMO wheels were sold as from a Stag, but when I had the tyres removed they had Datsun 240Z written inside. They have exactley the same offset as the S wheels, the extra 1/2" width is all on the outside.
14" wheels like the MGB ones will need 195/70 tyres to keep your speedo close to right.

The new (to me) PI is on the ubiquitous S alloys, due I would imagine to the lack of availability of 185x13 original tyres. I might change to early Stag 14" steel wheels with Rostyle trims as per original. Early TR6 and TR5s had 15" steel wheels with Rostyle trims, how cool would they be with some lower profile rubber? 195/65x15 is a close match rolling circumference wise for me, with 195/60x15 being even closer for your original 175x13 size tyres Rob.

Cheers Colin.

If the MGB wheels fit ok what about making them a bit wider ? I was think of doing something similar but found a set of 6x14 8 spokes which I then fitted stag wheel trims onto.
A company doing widening can be found here http://www.bandedsteels.com/

I have seen MGB's with wider wheels on and wonder if some of the MGB specialists were offering them in the past.

Helluva dear are they not?
What can be done if you know a good engineer,is get a set of s/hand steel production wheels with same pcd(BMW for instance),plasma out the stub welds, press out the centre,refit/press in turned around,Set the offset/inset you want, true them and weld 'em! Easy/cheap 6x14s,etc/AND different.
Hope this is of help,Bill.

Your right, probably a better way of doing it if you have access to the equipment to do it properly.

Another good point,Captain,is that there is no double weld where a band of steel has been laid in,you still have the integrity of a "one piece"wheel rim.A mate is having a set of 6x14 FWD.astra wheels "turned around" for fitting to a morris 1000.They look great!-Especially with the offset AND the round centre/venting holes.Good luck! Bill.
