I don't think you can just apply for a new log book in the original reg number either, perhaps that number is already assigned to another vehicle, either by legitimate transfer of by other means.
The only way to stay out of trouble is to follow the DVLA procedure, and if that gives some club members a red face, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have come up with some sort of plan, just hope I end up with a logbook of some sort so I will be able to use the car.
