What cars did your Dad drive?
many of you will remember the thread I started last month about a pink Tbird for sale and the conversation swung around to that car inspirng the looks of the Ford Corsair.
Dad has sent me this picture of his that we were all ferried around in during the mid 70s. He also had some other more unusual cars over the years, I wonder if I can get him to send me some pics of those.
So what cars were you ferried around in during your childhood?

Hello Friends
Ive just got these off some of the slides we have. I have fond memories of the MG KN and Triumph Renown. But there is also an MG TD. Enjoy.

Re: What cars did your Dad drive?
Mostly piles of old junk. From earliest childhood I can recall a Vauxhall of some type. Not sure exactly what model, but it was the one with the optional opening floor so you could see the road passing beneath you. That one went in 1960 with the introduction of the "Ten Year Test".
Next a 1934 Morris 8 Tourer. That was written off in an accident and replaced with a 1948 Austin 12. I always thought that was a nice car. When that died, it was replaced with a split-screen Morris Minor convertible.

Re: What cars did your Dad drive?
My Dad had a 1937 Morris 8, reg no. BBC 919, to which he was proud to have fitted 'easyclean' (pressed steel) wheels in place of the wire wheels. I bought it from him for £15 in August 1960, two months before the dreaded 'Ten Year Test' (I'd forgotten it was called that until Kevin's post.) Even though that early test was very mild compared with the present, the Morris failed severely on steering, brakes, suspension (spring shackle pins) and more. I was about to get my first 'hands on' experience with car repairs.
Dad replaced the Morris with a 1936(?) Austin limousine, BDP 305 (we called it Biddup"). This was an ex-mayoral car with a sliding glass screen dividing the front and rear compartments, with fold-down seats opposite the rear bench seat, and with the roof humped at the rear to accommodate the mayor's hat (perhaps a top hat?). One of Dad's first jobs was to hand repaint it, which I helped with.
The Austin was based on an 18 HP body but had a 12 HP engine which struggled to accelerate it. Each evening in the winter, Dad would drain the water from the radiator and engine, then refill it next morning. It wouldn't travel far before the engine boiled due to the bottom hose freezing despite the engine always labouring under its heavy load. Eventually he sold the Austin for £12, but the buyer never came back to collect it so he sold it to someone else for £5.
His next car was a 1955 Standard 10, EHK 669, which he ran for several years before scrapping it and letting me persuade him to buy a 1962 Ford Zodiac mk2 'lowline' (with all the trimmings including a record player!) from someone I worked with. He later sold the Ford and bought my old 1965 Triumph 2000, GGK 884C, which he ran until he died.
I don't have a picture of any of dad's old cars except the forgettable Standard 10, but here's an alternative. It shows my Dad and his brothers posing on a bicycle in front of a Ford model T, in the backyard of my grandfather's garage business.

Re: What cars did your Dad drive?
Ooh,
let me think, he had a mk2 spitfire and a couple of mk3's, at least a couple of heralds, this is around 1967-1975 ish.
erm, he had a Noble 200 bubble car which i think was his first car.
not sure if he ever got his hands on grandads Opel Olympia.
moving into late 70's early 80's, an austin A55 mk2, which if anybody sees it for sale (USK730) I want to buy it as I was brought home from the hospital in it. A Wolseley Hornet too. there were loads of mini's which changed to metros, my favourite being the mk1 MG metro, which sadly got cut up when i was 8 or 9 due to rust.
Probably forgetting some. But those are the cars I remember before he started getting boring rep boxes to drive for work.

Re: What cars did your Dad drive?
The only cars that I can remember my dad having, were a Renault 4 and then a 1983 I think Morris Ital in harvest gold I think?
Obviously he has had his 1975 2000 TC which he bought in 76.
The ital was swapped for a peugeot 505, then he had 90's european tat, like a renault 21, espace, vectra, Rav 4
the Rover 75 was his best modern car.
My Grandfather though had lots of interesting cars, most of which I can't remember right now, but included a dolly sprint, a dolomite 1850 HL, a 1970 2000, a Vanden Plas and my 2500S. I have the bill of sale for my 2500S which he ordered in 76 and part ex'd his dolly sprint for ( If my memory is correct)

Re: What cars did your Dad drive?
The earliest ones I can remember were a 95E Ford Popular, then a 105E Anglia (one of the first) bought in 1959, (we had a close relation who worked at Dagenham!). Following that was a Bedford CAL Martin Walter motor caravan which I learned to drive in and drove 1000s of miles around Europe. That got replaced by a new Leyland Sherpa Autosleeper Motor caravan in 1975 but sadly my dad died within a couple of years and it never really got used.
In between he also had a few small cars, like a Simca 1000, (rear engined). Quite fun to drive that was!
I shall have to find some pictures!
Cheers,
Mike.

Re: What cars did your Dad drive?
Some similarities there Lee, Dad started off with motorcycle combinations, I'm sure he can fill in the gaps with that side of things.englishbull wrote:Right from memory and childhood cars ar as follows:-

His first car was a Reliant Regal Supervan (which I think was due to the motorcycle licence)
Riley Elf
Ford Thames 15cwt Camper conversion
Ford Corsair V4 deluxe automatic (in the photo at the start of the thread)
Citroen GS1220 Club
SAAB 99L x2
SAAB 900GLs
Ford Escort 1.3L mk3 (yawn)
and I had my own cars from then onwards.
Have I forgotten anything Dad?
