Hello Allen,

it is not a problem but recently I have noticed that when I enter the board from an E-Mail topic notification I get the log on page. It used to be that I never logged on, as I was always set to 'on'

Just curious, I don't think I have altered anything in my control panel?

Alec,
When you next log on, make sure you have the 'Log me on automatically' box checked.
It should then take you directly to the topic.
I think the browsers occasionally chuck out the relevant bit of information from time to time.

Presumably it uses a "sticky cookie" so that the server knows you are logged on. I've noticed that some of the more recent virus and spyware checkers are more vigilant in cleaning out cookies than they used to be, so perhaps that is what is happenning. I;ve noticed that when I've given either of the computers that I usually use tocheck this forum a thorough check and clean, I have to log back on again.

Why on earth do we use such stupid expressions to name bits of information on computers. Much preferred three letter acronyms (TLA's)

Some people have the problem more than others. Other factors are perhaps things like upgrading the forum software. We started on phpBB 3.0 and have since gone through 3.0.1 and 3.0.2. It might cause the generation of a different cookie i.d. each time the software is updated.

Incidentally I've been looking at our site stats recently (provided by the host company). We get an exhaustive range of stats, from where most visitors come from, to how long they stay and which pages they look at.

Most significantly in September we got 54526 page views from 2579 unique visitors. I think that's pretty good.

Also significant is that in terms of page views, the USA dwarfs the next biggest, the UK, by a factor of more than 3:1.

Oh, and the busiest days are all midweek, usually Monday and Thursday/Friday. Usage peaks twice a day at 6 am and 2 pm.

I thought this was 2008 not 1984.

Do you get a list of IP addresses too? That might be interesting to analyse, perhaps only once though.

Interesting that the USA is 3:1 over the UK on volume, but how is that decision made? For example, I work for a US company (actually French owned) and all our IT is controlled from the USA. Do I therefore count as USA or UK while at work?

Yes I suspect the large number of web servers in the US has a lot to do with it, though I would imagine quite a few US users find themselves here when browsing about Triumphs in general.

Well, gee, thanks! I'm at home on Fridays so can't check my work IP address - I don't think. The home one on the PC is irrelevant as the router uses NAT but I'm glad to see that the router IP address doesn't appear in your list!

I shall have to check at work on Monday....

Hmm. My IP address is in the list - and fairly well up it too (I'm 'active retired' but always take a few breaks during the day to see what's going on here!).

What surprises me is, if I understood you correctly Mike, you use something called NAT that avoids your IP address being seen by others. I use a wireless router with a firewall set to 'on' and in security tests conducted via anti-virus websites the report has been that my computer cannot be identified, let alone accessed. At least I thought that was what they were saying.

Am I missing something? (Polite answers only, please!)
