Power steering is getting quite stiff.

I’ve noticed it’s getting more difficult to turn the steering wheel recently, especially at low speeds and when the engine is cold. When fully warmed up it is a bit easier, but by no means as easy to turn as it used to do. Is this a sign that I need a new rack? The pump is topped up with fluid so it’s not that. (Sadly). Tia.

Have you tried lubricating / greasing it?
Remove the hex bolt on the damper, fit an angled grease nipple and give it a couple of strokes with a grease gun. This is supposed to part of the service regime apparantly.

Thanks, I’ll give that a go.

It could be a track rod end, a ball joint at either end of the rack, or a top or bottom suspension swivel getting stiff, or of course a joint in the steering column. What makes you sure it is the rack itself?

I’m not sure if it is the rack, lol. It’s off to a local classic car garage tomorrow to have some welding done. Whilst it’s there, they will look at the steering and find out what the problem is! I’ll give an update when I get it back, but thanks everyone for the input. Btw, I have topped the rack up with grease, but that hasn’t made any difference.

Turns out it was the UJ that was knackered. The required parts were ordered from Chris Witor and have been fitted. I now have smooth operational power steering!!
