PAS Pump refurb

#1 Post by johnfrancis898 » Sun Apr 30, 2023 10:30 pm

Has anyone taken a PAS pump apart? Most of the manuals don’t mention anything about it except the BL manual which also has an exploded view. I tried to follow the BL manual which says remove the flywheel by undoing the nut on the front but I couldn’t see any nut or how the flywheel is actually held on. I’m getting a flywheel puller tomorrow so will have a go with that.

Hi John,
I haven't got one at hand to examine, but there were two types of PAS pulley fitted to the pumps on our Triumphs. One had what I would describe as a solid face around the mounting point of the pulley; the other had quite a deep recess. Not that this is much help, but maybe one type has a more obvious method of pulley removal, or maybe one type (maybe the one you have?) isn't removeable?

It would appear there are 2 types. The BL book shows a nut and a woodruff key in the shaft. I have eventually got the pulley off and it appears it is just pressed on to the end of the shaft which is tapered. There was no thread or woodruff key. The other parts are as the book.It must be the belt that holds it on! Having dismantled everything it’s a fascinating bit of engineering. If you can’t get the pulley off you can do most of the seals and clean it all through without removing the pulley. It would appear these are an American design used mainly by Chevrolet and they evolved from this. Also known as a Saginaw pump. For now I am going to fit the spare one I have so I can complete and test my new rack.
