Steering shaft manual MKII

#1 Post by Peter Douglas W » Tue Apr 18, 2023 9:20 pm

I have just recieved a new steering shaft. I have looked in all the manuals but I cannot find any instruction on how to replace it. I have done this several times when there was a rubber link but how does one get the old metal one out without disturbing the steering rack or steering column? Is there enough play somewhere to do it, without a lot of work?

I don't know whether the Mk1 is exactly the same, but if so then once the pinch bolts are removed the splines at one end will slide inwards enough so that they will release at the other.
Tap a thin tapering blade or screwdriver into the slot a little to widen the clamp and free up the splines.

That was what I was hoping might happen. My car is a very late MKII 2000. It is coming up for it'a MoT, That is why I am having it done by the garage.
