Really bad front top mount pics!

#1 Post by Forkie » Thu Feb 02, 2023 9:31 pm

So i thought i would take a few pictures showing just how bad my front strut top mounts really were, before i separate all the old front end 'pile' into two - one for CW for future rebuilds, and the rest for the scrapman !!

Again, same thing as the fuel sender pictures, one at a time...
Thought this may be helpful to any recently joined members, who very much like me when i first bought mine may not know everything there is to know about them ! I remember well when it was last on the road in 2008 the front end sounded just as unhappy as the rear end, and so i started asking questions back then.
So the information i was handed , as a simple ( but not a given - this is only a guide) test on the condition/state of the top mounts was : inside the engine bay, above the top mounts there is a flat rubber bung, this should be able to be depressed downwards a decent amount before feeling a split pin. Mine had nothing - in fact the shape of the split pin was almost appearing in the rubber. So i was told the top mounts are shot. 14 years later that information was bang on, as these pictures show. The inner sleeve has just literally ripped itself away from the rubber mount. When i drove it out of the garage and onto the recovery truck those few weeks back it was sounding awful - clunking banging :| I can now report that all is quiet, and i now have a decent deflection downwards in that rubber bung . So hopefully that is one job done for sure !!! If only i got some answers with the gearbox.....
Regards,Nige
