MK1 Wheel Trims on Stag Rims

#1 Post by v8sam » Sat Jun 27, 2020 6:08 pm

Hi all,

Some of you may like this, some maybe won't. My MK1 has been running on 14" Stag steel rims for many years now and was really only limited to using the rostyle wheel trims. Although more recently I have found that the original MK1 trims fit on these rims (the tyre valves need attention.) Because these are 13" trims, there is a gap exposing silver paint around the wheel which doesn't look correct. The obvious fix for this was to paint the outer rim with black chassis paint. In my opinion it looks good and original from a distance and also gives you the advantage of running lower profile tyres.

That is very effective - the black paint does give the appearance of them being 13" rims. Your Mk1 looks very tidy, and so does your garage! Can't say the same about my garage....

That's very clever. I've always loved the original wheel trim and chrome nave plates with the enamel badges. (Even nicer when they were real enamel, not just coloured paint)

Has anyone else ever noticed that the cut-outs in the inner edge of the trim don't quite match the positions of the bulges in the wheel?
They are close, but if you don't snip the cut-outs then they gradually turn and distort the tyre valve.

Thanks Johnny, I've just finished the 2000's revival, pleased with how it turned out :D

Yes, I noticed that too, I'll have to see about modifying the inner cutouts, never thought about them turning and damaging the valves
