What colour should a facelift MK1 wheel colour be?,pretty sure its silver(68 car)and if so what silver shade is closest to the original colour?
Re: MK1 wheel colour
Hi Dave,
1968 was the transition year from the original body shell to the modifications for the PI bodyshell. It depends whether it is an early or late '68 body shell. The wheels were silver on the PI body shell.
If the spare wheel well is in the boot floor, the rocker cover and air filter box is silver, and there are three nuts on rocker cover studs rather than the front fastening being a bolt, then it is the late bodyshell and the wheels should be silver.
If it has a black air filter box, the rocker cover is black with the front rocker cover fastening being a bolt rather than a stud, and the spare wheel is upright, then they should be cream.
What actual spare wheel has it got?
As for the shade of silver, I have no idea. Silver is a very difficult colour to get an exact match on, but when I had mine done for the PI, I looked the swatches at the powder coaters and chose the nearest match to the original. The finished result is excellent, and bearing in mind that the wheels are mainly covered, any slight shade difference from what is deemed the original shade will be barely noticeable as there will be nothing visibly to compare them to on the car.
Is there not a section of painted steel still visible on the original wheels - especially the spare, for comparison?

The silver is Ford Argent silver. I have used VHT high temperature wheel paint. There stock number SP188 Ford Argent Silver. Available from the internet in quality rattle cans.

Re: MK1 wheel colour
Thanks chaps ,its an August 68 car with horizontal spare wheel,so silver it is!
I will look at the VHT paint and get started on the wheels next week when my dad drops them down.
Hang on...
Just looked at the car,it has a black rocker cover and air filter box, bolt in the front rocker cover fastening, but later oil cap,all engine numbers match and it has the rocker cover breather setup, all original paintwork but black dials, leather, facelift rear bumper etc,it was registered Aug 68.

Re: MK1 wheel colour
Dave,
Has it got an MB or an MC engine number? Sounds like it is an MB engine. I presume therefore that some cars were still fitted with older MB engines during the introduction of the late body shell before MC engines were then fitted to the end of Mk1 2000 production.
It also may be worth checking the official parts book, as it may give the chassis number when white wheels changed to silver.
I think I would go for silver wheels with the car having a very late bodyshell.
