Steering column mounting in bulkhead.

#1 Post by Phil T » Sun Dec 16, 2018 6:00 pm

Steering column appeared to be moving up and down so I thought that the clamp had loosened, but it appears that the mounting in the bulkhead had vanished......

On consulting Mr Haynes's work and Rimmer's on line shop I can't actually see what I need.

Help!

It's a rubber or plastic bush It's listed in Rimmers catalogue. A bit of a bastard to fit though. Get the plastic one.

As Charles says, get the poly one....
https://www.chriswitor.com/proddetail.php?prod=153240P
To fit, disconnect the top joint on the steering shaft just in front of the bulkhead, then slacken the steering column clamp inside the car and seperate the the two multiplugs for the indicator & wiper switches. Then pull the steering wheel/column back into the car til the end of the shaft is through the bulkhead. You can then fit the polybush to the bulkhead with the larger diameter flange inside the car. As it says in the manuals, refitting is a reverse of removal (!!), but it is easier with two people, especially when trying to reconnect the column to the steering shaft.

Job done, one hour to dismantle, 30 seconds to replace the bush and 45 mins to reassemble. Thanks to no 3 son for assistance, definitely a two man job!

Biggest pain was the parcel shelf.............

Although biggest worry was when son lit up a cancer stick near where I had removed the fuel pipe round the air filters................. spilled fuel and naked flames concerned me somewhat.
