Tyre choice

#1 Post by valencia » Wed Mar 07, 2018 11:29 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions and opinions about new tyres, it is for my mk2000, I have the original steel rims so I am looking at 175/80r13. I have noticed that there does not seem to be a lot of choice available and after the recent weather winter tyres seem a good idea. At the present time I have Goodyear standard radials on the front and Nexen M+S on the rear, when I last bought tyres the Nexens were what turned up by chance at my local tyre bay, but after a brief tour of West Scotland last week where the car did well for traction I am considering a full set.
I am interested to hear what other members are using, particularly in the bad weather.
Thanks,
Michael.

Have you considered going to 14" rims? A lot of different tyre choices available here.
In the past I've used Jap. rear wheel drive wheels from the '80's . ie Mitsi Sigma etc with same pcd and off set. Now using Stag type 14" rims.

Hopefully not needing too many bits.

Hi Tony,
I did think of the 14inch rims, and of course the stag alloys are a easy swap, I also looked at some MGB wheels, 14inch same pcd but 22mm offset, am I correct in that the Triumph offset is 19mm, I wasn't sure.
Saw these for sale.

In my opinion the rostyle MG wheels look totally wrong on a Triumph.

Possibly the best bet might be Stag 14" steel rims. They have the correct offset and the original knave-plates should fit. If you can find the rims that is!

Cheers,
Mike.

Yes, I agree, the Stag steels would be great and that would also solve the problem of my somewhat rusty original rims that I have to douse with waxoyl every year, but as you say they are rare now. I think I either have to get some Stag alloys or carry on with what I have, there are quite a few 175/80 r13's available anything from £35-£65 but no winter types unless I go for 14inch. The MG rims looked good value and not rusty but what they look like on I don't know, it's a bit late if I've already paid for them.
Thanks for you input everyone,
Mike.
