mk2 lockheed brake shoe expander

#1 Post by pete lewis » Tue May 02, 2017 3:44 pm

whilst refurbing the rear brakes on my mk2 to get a handbrake the primary lever pivot was well worn easy to replace with a shanked bolt , so whats available ..for 2000 diddly squat ,
so what the difference to the Stag expander, which is cheaper and easily available

well the following spells out a missed opportunity

the levers on 2000/2500 are expander spreader bar 35654410/11 for rh and lh the SAME AS STAG

the handbrake pivoting lever is 3626 655X on 2000 and 3626 662K on Stag, the difference being the Stag lever is 15mm longer to the clevis hole
giving more mechanical advantage well thats good

so advantage to all 2000/2500 is to fit the cheaper and available Stag expander part numbers 519070/71 which will improve handbrake applied effort to the shoes with some increase in travel on the handbrake lever .

so why has the supplier trade not work this out ?????? its not rocket science

the adjuster cam ratchets are fine and work well .

will button her up tomorrow and see what the end result is like

Agree to a point Pete. However, think of the "you've sent me the wrong parts. These levers are longer". I changed my rear braking to Stag but cannot remember if I changed other bits other than the drums and shoes. All works well but does have a tendency to lock on one side if the pedal is pressed down in the "rigor mortis" position (which ABS is supposedly overcomes).

Let everyone know your experience after a change.

Kev
p.s.
The longer levers might exert even more pressure (leverage).

Yes , theres been a lot of photo enhance to identify lockheed numbers and
the longer actuating lever is only working the hand brake

I have purchased a set of stag and dimensionaly the afermarket repros are identical other than the longer L shaped hand brake lever clevis hole postion

rebuild tomorrow.... then we know for certain it has no hidden gremlins

like in car hand brake lever travel

They are on and work fine just a small adjust to the cable
6 clicks stalls the car ,
realy pleased the idea worked out
so
519070/71 stag assy are the way to go
If you have any concerns about the cable lever you can drill a clevis hole
to replicate the 2000 spec and then you have the choice

as both 2000and stag use the identical cross bar its needs the back plate 6
nuts removing to fwd the hub a few mm to get the barpast the wheel cylinder
