engine cooling

#1 Post by iggy » Wed Dec 26, 2012 5:38 pm

hi all ive been searching for a cooling fan switch and found this company mawsolutions.com that specialise in vehicle cooling they sell screw in variable temperature fan switchs in bsp metric and npt threads with a temp range of 70deg c to 120deg c. i dont suppose there cheap but should be better than the capillary type that fit in the top hose, what temperature should the fan cut in and out at? i was thinking it should cut in at 100deg c and out at 85deg c,

Hello Iggy

Mine is set up with a 82 stat. Fan cuts in at 95 and cut out at 85. This keeps the stat open all the time.

thanks lee my temp guage has never reached half way ive only had the car for about six weeks so never run it in warmer weather, but the heater gets nice and hot though, ive got a couple of 10" electric fans and a relay i intend to remove the viscious fan and fit the 2 electric ones at some stage so the engine should warm up quicker, really need to buy a recon diff first though any ideas where i can buy one in the south east

Hello Iggy

The general consensus on here is to use Mike Papworth but he is in Conventry. I use TR Enterprises as the are closer to me.

Try substituting the temp. sender unit first, it could be giving a low (false) reading if the heater is hot enough.
When I first got my current 2000, the needle hardly moved off the stop, but gave a normal reading after changing the sender unit.

I don't know if you can do this on all 2000's but my 2.5PI has PAS - so the radiator bottom hose has a short metal piece. I purchased a thermal switch from Moss for around a tenner, cut a hole in the metal pipe and had brazed on a nut. Wired it up and hey presto, auxillary electric fan cuts in/out automatically.....non of the Kenlowe top hose capillary tube rubbish to worry about!

Yes, that's also true - had it done on my MG 1300 this time last year and then fitted a Revotec electronic fan controller as they allow infinite temperature setting - it's actually a much better option (but more expensive).

My pi never reaches halfway either, usually sits at 1/3rd to just below halfway, the estate used to always sit at nearly 2/3rds until I changed the stat for one from CW. It now sits at just below halfway. Both heaters get good and warm.
If I was you I wouldn't worry about the temp. reading, sounds just right to me.
