Have bitten the bullet and ordered some BCM and BDM needles.
I think it would be difficult to modify 2 needles to the same specs ( have got Des Hammills book)
As you say the black art of needles!
Trouble is I have two cars, almost twins in specs, so some time will have to do both I suppose!
Maybe I should give up driving buses and work on my cars. But really need the cash to do this!

you will need 8 No. 5/16" x 3/4" long UNC set screws

the filters Should come with gaskets

Also if you are going to chop them to fit, i found that the best way to replace the spacer stud was with kitchen unit screws as per the attached....

I trimmed the filter with a dremmel and used some sealer to stick the filter to one side of the base plate (the top plate, so that you can remove the filter and keep the base plate attached to the carbs)

Tony,

I didn't think about this before but did your K&N's come with ram pipes? These really should be fitted as well; they smooth the air flow and become increasingly important as the throttle opens further. In reality you'll be fitting stub stacks but if you're going to the trouble of K&N's the stub stacks should be seen as essential

Thanks everyone. Got the rear one fitted after much standing on head etc to get cover bolts on. Of course all our 2500's have tandem brake cylinders which reduces the room to fit one's hands in ! David, only just enough room for filters no alone ram tubes. I have run a 2 1/2' pipe from the front on which I'll fit some flexy ducting to the carbs. The actual width of the filter element is 2 1/16'. Rather than hack this one around I've found a 1 7/8' element on the K&N website and will try to find one I think.
Bit p...ed of with Rimmers in this instance, sold units as fitting HS6. but only the two top bolt holes for the carb flange have been punched out. I've drilled the third hole so as to get a dust proof seal.
Trouble is both my 2500's are almost twins, so I guess if all this works out I'll have to give the S the same treatment

Tony, thinking about it, my K&N's had 4 holes, to bolt to the carbs, however only 2 lined up.

I have used just the 2 with the gaskets supplied....

If your worried about a good seal then you could use some no setting gasket compound also.

Bit puzzled about your tandem brake cylinder though? mine is single and I know this is how it left the factory as the car has been in my family from new....

does yours have stag brakes fitted?

All the NZ/Australian mk2s had tandem m/c, as did lhd continental cars. It was only us that got the poverty spec single system. The tandem system isn't the same as Stag parts either.

I'm pretty sure you'll find that K&N do a stub stack that fits inside the element...

Also, I find that smearing grease on the gaskets creates an air tight seal and preserves the gaskets indefinetly...

Got some gasket paper and usually make my own if I have nothing suitable. This goes way back to my service station petrol pump repair days when we couldn't carry every model's gaskets so carried rolls of suitable material with us. As I said previously I didn't much like the two bolt fitting supplied with the K&N's so drilled the extra lower hole in the rear plate and made new gaskets to suit the HS 6's.
