WATER IN FOOTWELL

#1 Post by INNSBRUCK69 » Fri May 01, 2015 3:25 pm

I have noticed that the carpets in the drivers side footwell are wet. I have checked the windscreen and it doesn't appear to be leaking. Where else is this likely to be coming from ?

It will be the windscreen. Unless you have holes in the floor or the sills!

Hello Innsbruck69,

another possible source is the seals on the wiper spindles or the heater box drains are blocked?
The windscreen is the favourite though.

Also check that the drains at the bottom of the front wings (immediately behind the wheelarches) are clear; in cases where these have become blocked, I have heard of the wing cavities actually beginning to fill with water and overflowing into the front footwells...

Check the bulkhead because they can rot, especially where the heater plenum is. Needs removal of the dash to check though ........ which is why I have not done the one on Woody yet!

I'm actually wondering why you are confident it's not the screen? Most will have at least a few pinholes in the metal below the rubber, so the leak would be between metal surround and rubber, so extremely difficult to spot.
And of course if the car is being used, the joint between bulkhead and floor is perfectly placed to receive any spray off the front wheels.

I don't think it is the screen because I have poured water over it and the inside of the screen, and the inside rubber is bone dry.
