Diff oil, being creative!

#1 Post by Alan Chatterton » Sat Mar 22, 2014 6:47 pm

So, you have to fill the diff with oil, its in the car.
You have oil, but none of the little filler tubes that go with it, and everywhere you can buy them from is shut.

Oil has to go on tonight, as its being towed on a dolly first thing tomorrow morning.

Using the (limited, due to most of it being packed away on storage) contents you find in the house and garage, how do you fill the diff.

Any guesses?

Alan

Try one of those conditioner type filler container for washing machines. Not lage capacity but it will eventually all go in.

I have a selection of plastic pipe of various diameters which I use to bleed the brakes on different cars, as the bleed nipples vary in size. I would use one of these if a suitable diameter, but then again it depends what you have in your garage.......
You also could use a short piece of 2.5mm household cable, put the end of each inner wire in the vice to pull them out of the outer sleeve in turn, then use the outer sleeve with a cable tie to keep it attached to the oil container nipple!
But again, it depends on what you hoard in the garage Alan!

Interesting ideas. How does the conditioner thing work, as the filler is on the side, how do you get it in rather than just pouring down the casing.

I like the thoughts of the 2.5mm insulation, but the bigger problem is no nipple on the bottles. They are just plain gear oil with a 1" diameter hole and a screw cap. No filler fittings at all.

I think John is closest for now........ But not quite!

Unless you have an old fashioned oil can with the thumb operated lever.....

Make a little half-cup shaped funnel from Blu-tack or kids Plasticine and stick it on the diff casing around the filler hole.
Or make a vee-shaped channel from some stiff card and pour it down that !

Creative, but have you all forgotten how little room there is under there to fill the diff?!

In the end I got an empty squeezy washing up liquid bottle. Drilled the hole in the cap a touch bigger, then super glued a short length of old washer noozle tube into it. The very small diameter tube made it hard work and it took about an hour to do, but its done!

Libby is being towed on a dolly tomorrow to my Mums house to live in her garage for a while. Sam's Moggy went last weekend as we are hoping to complete on the new house in less than 3 weeks!

I usually stand the bottle in a pan of very hot water for 20mins or so to make the oil flow easier.

Just recently I have started using a large syringe and some plastic tube, the control is unbelievable.
Of course having the pit just makes diff and box level checks something you do whilst brewing a cup of tea.

I do remember many years ago, when Castrol EP bottles had a tube joiner as part of the package, my grandad had about 20 joined together to make a tube long enough to 'pump' the fluid in with the bottle next to the car rather than under it.

I think dad uses the pump oil can john mentioned.
