Fuel Sender

#1 Post by SimonO » Sat Aug 31, 2013 2:35 pm

Could someone please post a picture of their fuel sender? - I don't think mine is oriented correctly and therefore is misreading (plus the fact fuel is slightly leaking from it means that I'll sort it when I fit a new seal/gasket next week). Ta!

Having recently replaced mine in my Mk1 saloon (and removed several from my 'scrapers' to find a good one), I think that you will find that it will only mount in one position. I'll stand corrected, but if you struggle, I 'll check the terminal positions and that should give you some indication. Just make sure the float arm isn't bent. It's shaped near to its pivot point, but its general profile is basically straight.

I think you will find Johnny is correct - they only go one way round - and the float has to hang down anyway or it won't work!

Anyway attached are two photos. Second one from my Mk1 2000 (all saloon tanks are the same as far as I know) and the first from my Mk1 PI estate (for reference).

It's possible that the arm with the float on is stuck, or sticky.

Check that the movement is free. They can be removed and cleaned.

I think I'm just being daft now...

The sender is in the only way it would seem to fit - although it is still leaking with a new gasket and securing ring :? (New Rimmers Fuel Sender)

Does this look right? Obviously I have taken most of the fuel out to be able to put the sender in...

The float seems to be in line with the terminals in the 'full position' - but to put the float at the bottom of the tank, they would need to move clockwise more.

I think that perhaps you need to compare your new sender with an original. I'm wondering if the new one isn't made quite the same.

I may have one (some?) old saloon senders which I could photograph for comparison. The important bit will be the orientation of the float movement relative to the mounting flange. Once in the tank, this can't be seen!

Yes, they only go in one way. There are some little offset lugs on them that go into equivalent slots in the tank hole.

I've never had a problem with them not sealing. How did you do it up? I tend to use a hammer and drift. Carefully.

Cheers,
Mike.

I'm pretty sure the arm with the float on the end needs to be calibrated (bent) so that it reads correctly. When I changed mine (bought from Chris Witor so should be ok) I checked it worked and the fuel light came on outside the tank but I didn't think to check it was reading correctly once in the tank, then of course somewhat embarrassingly discovered that just under half a tank on the gauge = empty tank! Didn't have any problems with leaking though, I used a new seal and bedded it in some of that red instant gasket stuff (but of course I may live to regret that as I will have to take it out when I get round to it to fix the calibration issue).
