Speedo on cecil, swings quite a lot at most speeds,am sure someone on the forum said that a cure could be obtained by lubricating the inner wire,is this true.

Don't get too much lubrication up near the speedo head. Oil or similar getting in there between the magnet and disc is another cause of the swinging needle syndrome.

I have the same on my mk2...... replaced the speedo cable, with no improvement.

It was suggested to place the speedo over a a heated bath of thinners, to let the steam penetrate and clean out the internals....

I haven't done this yet, so can't comment on its affectiveness

Also check there are no tight turns on the speedo cable routing. This can make the inner go in fits and starts!

Mike.

Does it have the 90 degree turn bolt-on bit at the gearbox end? There is another short length of flexi cable inside it.

It's worth unscrewing the cable from the speedo end and sticking in a matchstick and twiddling it. It should turn freely without any stiffness.

The other thing I've done in the past is to disconnect the speedo cable and stick a bit of tape on the inner, sort of like a flag. Then have a drive - while being able to see the 'flag' - and see if it turns smoothly or if it seems to jump.

Not easy I know, but it might help!

Cheers,
Mike.

Bill,

The following was posted by me some time ago in answer to a similar question:

My car had a similar problem a few years back. I first suspected the cable, but its condition and line of run were fine.

The fault was, as others have found, in the speedometer head itself. I washed the pivot points and bushes with electrical cleaner aerosol and then introduced just a tiny drop of very thin oil - sewing machine oil, clock oil or the like - using the end of a thin piece of wire to carry and deposit it. It has operated perfectly since.

And it's still working perfectly! This is on a Mk 2 but could also do the job on your Mk 1.
