Bad fuel?

Re: Dads Car wont start
I had wondered this, but when the car was last used and put away in the garage in August it was running fine.Jonathan Lewis wrote:Bad fuel?
I think I'll put a pipe from the fuel pump pick up into a container of fresh fuel, just to make sure though.
we have taken the air filter housing off, too and removed the filters, to rule out lack of air flow.... no difference.
To recap on my findings using a multi meter:
Coil (HT lead connection point = 12V)
Points spark when opened
new red rotor arm & Dizzy cap fitted
spark at plugs when engine is turned over
Fuel getting to float chamber in both carbs

Re: Dads Car wont start
Hi Owen,
I know it seems a long shot, but I have experienced this twice myself, on each occasion due to refuelling with contaminated petrol (water the first time, some sort of black slime on the second). Each time, the car in question ran OK after refilling, but subsequently wouldn't restart from cold and had to be drained/flushed-through before it would run again.
Good luck...!
Regards,

I notice you say that you have 12 volts at the coil. Therefore you don't appear to have a ballast and need a 12 volt coil.
Cheers
Tony.

Hello Tony,
checking the coil + ve voltage can be misleading, if the points are open a ballast system will read 12 v, it's only when the points are closed will a true reading be obtained.
This is true of any diagnoses done measuring voltage, the circuit must be complete for a meaningful reading.

I read the whole thing intensely thinking all would be revealed, but the ending was a Dr Who cliffhanger!
What was the cause of the problem? I won't be able to sleep.

Sorry all, not been on here for a long time due to many personal problems......
Finally got to spend a few hours on the car a few weeks back, went through everything one by one and replaced with known good parts off my own car.......
It was a duff new condenser
we had a spark, but very weak, so I put my old lucas points & condenser on and it fired straight away.

Fit NOS or good S/H is the lesson learnt here.....................
Glad sorted mate and was not ignoring FB message at the International but had bad signal and was rushing about like a Blue a**ef fly

No problem, guessed you'd be busy! Gutted I couldn't make it, my dad popped in on the Friday for a nosey, said he saw your car but not you.
Dads is at the garage now, having the PAS fitted..... I bought all the parts some years ago and was going to fit myself....... never got round to it, so for his birthday we all clubbed together to pay for the local classic car garage to fit

Re: Dads Car wont start
I don't think even NOS can be relied on. I've had NOS coils and capacitors that don't work or fail after a very short time. I'm suspicious of the pristine condition of the packing - who keeps this old stock for 40 years in a dust-free environment, like a boxed dinky toy in a collector's cabinet? And I'm sure there are dubious "red" rotor arms around.
After bad experiences with several old cars I've realised that the best NOS comes in a scruffy box looking as if it's been lying at the bottom of a pile in a shed.
