Re: Very hot alternator
" When running somewhere between 13 and 14.5 is about normal, but much more than that is not!" So 18 and rising when revved would indicate something wrong with the regulator? !! I take it the regulator is somewhere inside the alternator - is it fixable, replaceable, or would this mean a new alternat...

Very hot alternator
The car has been out of action since the start of covid, but I have been starting it every few months and getting it up to temperature. Quite recently it has become very difficult to start, splutters and misfires, but usually finally settles down and runs smoothly. Today it did the same, but then st...

Re: MkI Heater Label
I have a 1967 Mk1 - not sure whether that means pre- or post- facelift - I've never known what that meant. The heater label of the original is unreadable, but the replacement is identical, from an early 1964 model. It has the 3 holes like yours, and the plate, in excellent condition, reads: CODE FHF...

Re: Strut shims
"speak well of the Trackrite for getting tracking, wheel alignment or whatever you want to call it"
That is precisely my point - wheel alignment is not tracking, which I seem at last to have got through!
Anyway, nuff said. My apologies to anyone I have irritated.

Re: Strut shims
I think you are confusing tracking with centralising the steering.

Re: Strut shims
"If you just adjusted one wheel only, . . . . . if both fronts were set equally " That's what I don't understand. On a simple traditional steering set up there is a single track rod connecting the two wheels. If you twist that rod then the opposing threads at each end wind the two wheels so that the...

Re: Strut shims
I take the point that the wheels should have a zero toe-in when moving, and the usual 1/8" toe-in static setting makes an allowance for the wheels tending to splay slightly when moving, as all the minute play in steering joints and suspension combines to force the wheels outwards very slightly. But ...

Re: Strut shims
I don't understand your point. Front tracking is the degree of toe-in or toe-out, of the two wheels relative to each other. One wheel can't have a toe-in. Do Robin Reliants have to have their front wheel tracked?

Re: Strut shims
The front wheels can only be tracked relative to each other - there is no such thing as an individually tracked front wheel. But the rear wheels are set individually, relative to the fore/aft line, because of course they cannot steer. You can set these equally just by looking from the rear and squin...

I think because it syphons back, doesn't it?
Also I think the oil in the oilways up in the block can run back, through the filter, if there is no non-return valve.
