The odometer is working for a few miles then slows and then stops, noticed by seeing what the trip is up to. Meanwhile, the speedometer is working perfectly!
Is it time to strip it down and give it a clean?

I'll soon need to rebuild the rack on my car, since it's got a bit of play in it. What usually causes this? I've not had a rack in bits before, but have read the works manual and see that various components could wear...
