Re: 2500S engine reluctant to start and barely runs.
Hello Tony, do you have a multimeter, it's very useful, and will save a lot of work by passing wiring as guess work? If you are not familiar with using one, when doing voltage checks ensure the circuit is complete otherwise you will get a misleading reading, generally battery voltage. E.g. measuring...

Re: cut-outs after reving above 4500rpm
Hello Ginetta, I think we are getting a bit confused with all the inputs. You now say it is a pi engine not just that it has a pi cam.(I.e. with the higher compression ratio). There is a difference between carburettor engine and pi engine distributors, does yours have the pi distributor, from memory...

Hello Nige,
I'm not sure how Triumph intended the breather arrangement of your car but some need a sealed engine breather system and anything that breaks the seal upsets the engine running?

Re: Genuine help from you experts needed!!
Hello Forkie, you must be pleased and relieved. A point about oil, I always understood that a multigrade oil like a 20 50 has the viscosity of a 20 grade oil when cold and has the performance of a 50 grade oil when hot. S.U. do specify a 20 grade oil for their carburettors, and from interest I Googl...

Re: Genuine help from you experts needed!!
Hello Forkie, I don't know why S.U. say to test with the damper in place, it only works with the piston rising, not falling. Blocking that breather hole will not give an accurate test I don't think. All the oil level needs to do is cover the damper base as a minimum, as the piston rises the oil leve...

Re: Genuine help from you experts needed!!
Hello Forkie, I mistakenly thought that you had tested both together. You do not need a new carburettor, but possubly new dashpot and piston assembly. If the seal is below specification i.e. falling too fast, this will slow the rate of lift when you accelerate so richening the mixture, and if piston...

Re: Genuine help from you experts needed!!
Hello Forkie, I just checked mu S.U. manual and the way they test them is with the damper in, blocking the holes and with a small nut and bolt with a large washer which acts as a stop to prevent the damper leaving the piston. Their time is 5 to 7 seconds from fully in to hitting the washer at the ba...

Hello Forkie,
that both have identical times sounds good, that means the pistons should rise and fall in unison which is what you want.

Re: Genuine help from you experts needed!!
Hello Nige, there is an old practice used in motor racing of what was called 'Plug cutting' to gauge mixture strength, pre days of sophisticated mixture analysis. It was used to check full power setting but the same can be done with your car when it reaches the stuttering stage. A suitable relativly...

Re: Genuine help from you experts needed!!
Hello Forkie,
there is a specific S.u. oil which, from memory is a straight 20 grade but when I had S.U.'s I always used engine (20/50) oil.
