Re: Clutch advise please
Assuming there is no actual visible leakage of fluid then it sounds like an internal leakage in the master cylinder piston seal. I've had the same thing in the brake master cylinder of another car - weak spongy brakes, but if one gives the pedal a quick double pump it works normally. I got so used t...

Re: Smoke from oil cap
I've a spare early engine and just been out to refresh my memory. Yes, there is no ventilation system as such - the inevitable fumes in the crankcase and rocker cover simply have to find their own way out via the snout, low down on the dipstick side. Presumably there is a slight suction effect at th...

Re: Tyres for 1970 2000 mk2
I've got a 1946 ex-army trailer which had its original tyres. On the M4 once one of the tyres softened and turned from being circular to a series of flats, shaped like an old threepenny bit. I noticed the trailer bouncing up and down, and managed to pull off soon and drove round Cardiff slowly looki...

Re: Change Sealed Beam MK1 2000 Headlights
I think I've probably bought LHD reflectors ( even though they're marked UK), When I replaced the headlights in a LandRover of similar age I came across a ridiculous confusion in nomenclature. Some people in the parts dept read LHD as meaning "Left Hand Drive, whereas others swore that LHD meant "L...

Re: Clutch won't bleed out
Regarding problems over clutch engagement and harsh action, I recall ages ago having problems because I had omitted to fit the sleeve location pin when reassembling the release mechanism. This caused the clutch basically to have only two positions - in and out, and caused a kangarooing action when p...

Re: Clutch master to slave pipe
Mine has the bleed nipple on top. Bleeding involves nothing more than opening the nipple half a turn and letting a bit of fluid out, bubbles first. I notice that there are two slightly different styles. Mine has the two ports set at a slight angle, but the illustration in Autobooks has them both par...

Re: Laid up insurance - what value?
Logically, I'd have thought it ought to be cheaper because : no risk of damaging another vehicle no risk of injury to passengers less risk of theft (up on blocks, wheels removed?) On the other hand: Risk of accident to you or the car from tinkering, lying underneath, petrol, etc I get agreed value u...

Re: Compression test
You do not mention whether those readings are with the wet test or the dry. Both are vital for diagnosis. I assume you have followed the basics: Plugs out, throttle held wide open, insert gauge firmly in No 1, spin for 10 seconds. Repeat on the other cylinders. Then do the whole test again, but put a...

Re: Oil filter leak
As new paper filters come with the rubber sealing ring, there is no reason not to change it every oil filter change, although I do know people don't, but they become hard and don't then seal effectively if not changed. I once had a MK 1 that had two rings. The first one was rock hard and at first d...
