Re: Valance
In my view a properly set up steering system doesn't need power assistance. It's useful for those rare occasions when you really do need to turn the wheel from lock to lock while stationary, but we don't do that do we because it wears the tyres out :) The first test is to jack up both front wheels o...

Re: Another seat belt question….
I'm not sure I get your point about the retractor part not working as it's on the floor. The ebay item seems to me to be designed to go on the floor, so should surely be fine? It looks like the modern version of my original ones, but with a semi-rigid connecting bit between the seats bolted to the f...

Re: Clicking noise, suggestions please
I've always adjusted taper roller bearings with the wheel fitted, rocking it top to bottom and gradually tightening the nut. The play initially sounds as a clonk, then a click, and finally you can only just feel it through your fingers. I do this without regard to whether the hole lines up - if it d...

Brake pad lightly touching the disc on one side when turning, or the disc touching a bit of rusty dust plate?

Re: Propshaft fitting
The "pole vaulting" argument has featured on other car forums, and the conclusions seem to be pretty catastrophic at either end. Four feet of propshaft flailing around is going to do a lot of damage anywhere, but perhaps would bring a speedy end sooner at the front (by stopping the engine) but might...

Re: Propshaft fitting
There is frequent debate in the Series LandRover Club about this, and the concensus is that each joint should be at the gearbox end, a) because they are higher off the ground so get less road dirt splash b) because it's heavier than the plain tube so it reduces unsprung weight I don't think either a...

Re: Compression Testing - Hot or Cold?
Removing only one plug at a time will considerably slow down the rate of turning over, which will give lower readings. Testing with a few drops of oil will be more realistic of ordinary running - hence oil scraper rings to remove excess oil. There is bound to be some sealing effect , but obviously a...

Re: Rear bulb holder(s)
Three little springy contacts inside the holder, and three blobs on the end of the bulb? I've never seen one like that - must be after my time. :) I do know that there are/were two kinds of bulb with 2 connections - those where the two corresponded with two filaments (earthed through the casing of t...

Re: Seat Belts
Mine's got the original grey belts in the front.
There were none in the back. Somewhere I've got a pair of grey belts for the rear, salvaged from a previous car I broke, but until they turn up I've got standard black.
