It should be just tight in the end of the crank...... Have you tried pushing it back in?

The first thing i would do is slacken off all the links between the carb's and then adjust them. The gunson unit is very good for this, but if you can access a co meter all the better. Once all balanced retighten the links and it should be fine. This is what i did on my 2500 S.

i have just got my 2500s listed as "historic". i was registered jan 77.
but it was built 1976, i found this from the bmm, it was £6 for an email confirming build date :D
but dvla would not accept that :( so i had to buy a heritage certificate at£42.
but still much cheaper than 6mths rfl :)
