Is the distributor cam free to rotate on the shaft? Mine was rusted so the mechanical advance was all or nothing, and the timing at idle would vary Simple to check, by grabbing the rotor arm and seeing if it moves freely and springs back.

According to the works manual, post engine MG75000 the static timing is indeed absolute TDC

Have you changed the fuel filter in the boot?

My PI has the injector number stamped into every elbow joint

No need to remove the injector hoses, just undo the three injector keeper plates and withdraw the injectors. Removing the hoses can lead to bleeding issues.
