Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Gosh its been over a year since an update. Well I have been busy. Not just on the car. We had troubles with the house which took a lot of time and finances. Then covid comes along and having to isolate twice. Moving on the engine and gearbox are back in the car. Other jobs done track control arms re...

Interlude Mk2 brakes
Hi, I thought as a break from the MK1 pi engine overhaul, I would get on with fixing the rear dragging brake on the MK2. After much verbal abuse to the car it looks like the culprit has been found. The adjusters have worn too much. Basically when the brakes where applied the offside rear would stick...

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Well folks only 3 weeks to the national and progress has been made. The crank is in and endfloat set. The rear oil seal housing is in. The front bridge piece is in, those wooden wedges are a pain they broke up when being tapped in. I made more of my own. It took ages to find all the little pieces of...

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
No John, use the Golf can't beat 61 to 68 mpg. The current pi engine is ok but uses oil and the pressure gets very low when hot. The block is black. I did buy another colour but did not like it. Should have gone for dayglow yellow. Anyhow the crank is back in with new vandevell shells. The thrust wa...

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
Been busying myself in the garage for a few days painting the block and head. Checking the oilways are clear of debris in the block. The head has been assembled with new valves/springs etc. I did find the oilway at the back of the head although thoroughly washed and acid dipped it was still gummed u...

Alternator problems
How many of you have had an alternator surge in current. Fortunately on a MK1 you have an ammeter. You will observe the needle go up to the end stop of charge. This problem started in the latter part of last year, it made the head lights go very bright and the pi pump speed up at bit. Then all would...

Re: Mk1 Pi engine rebuild
I am aiming to spray it myself John. The sump and timing cover have come up ok considering they are now 50.
The timing cover is now assembled with a new tensioner and oil seal.

What colour
I may be setting the cat amongst the pigeons. I was wondering if anyone has ever painted their engine after a rebuild in anything other than black. I did have a car with a pale green engine many years ago. I was considering Cadilac dark blue or Land rover duck egg blue, just to be different. Any tho...
