Re: Flywheels

I have at last been able to make progress on this long long build. The flywheel on the "old" engine which has a short back crank is very different to the one I bought, which cannot fit because it would foul the backplate before it met the crank. The differences are very obvious and I have taken phot...

Re: Old misfire - again

I hesitate to ad my two pennorth in such experienced company but I have had a similar occurrence with a different vehicle.

It turned out to be something in the fuel tank that occasionally and temporarily blocked the outlet

Re: Cylinder heads

I am still ,very slowly , trying to get my replacement engine ready to instal. When I came to set the valve clearances the adjusters are almost all the way through the lock nuts which set alarm bells ringing' It seems that I have a 218227 head and need longer pushrods, the 8.3125 length which look l...

Re: Flywheels

Clearly I bow to the much greater knowledge on here but if there are two different "depths" to the crank does this not suggest that either the flywheels or the clutch assemblies are different so as to present the pressure pad on the clutch at the right distance from the engine. The difference is of t...

Re: Flywheels

Research on this forum shows that some people have had clutch problems after fitting the wrong type of flywheel.

Re: Flywheels

Many thanks John. My understanding, confirmed by CW, is that the short back crank needs a different offset to the flywheel to the one for the long back and that they are not interchangeable because they put the clutch assembly in a different position in relation to the backplate. Until I pull the 20...

Re: Flywheels

I have asked this question in several places, including the very knowledgeable Chris Witor, but no one either seems to know, or is unwilling to reveal any details. I cannot believe that this information does not exist within the collective knowledge on this board, or is it just that I an being a nuis...

Flywheels

Still building the replacement engine and would like to have it all built up before removing the "old" one so I need, among other things, a flywheel. I have a short back crank and I have the opportunity to buy a flywheel but not certain how I can identify whether it is the correct type. Anyone got a...

Sumps

This may not be news but I have discovered that sumps do differ in size. I replaced the original one which was well battered with a good used one but found the crank fouled on the shallow part. Putting old and "new" side by side it is obvious that the old one is much deeper on both the shallow and d...
